ACTION ITEM: Turning Point in Port Orford School

A proposal has been made to approve a Turning Point USA chapter at Pacific High in Port Orford. The students were clear that the club would be developed under the name of Club America, which is Turning Point’s program geared to high schools. The school board tabled any motion on this subject and delayed its decision until the February meeting to allow Board members time to research the matter. This proposal has caused us concern. On January 26th, the School Board for the Port Orford/Langlois School District listened to a presentation from students, requesting the School Board’s approval for a Turning Point USA chapter at Pacific High School.

Here is a link to view that meeting.

The presentation is impressive. These are bright young adults. The ideas they present sound like a wonderful way to foster student discourse.

At INCC, our concerns center, of course, on the affiliation with Turning Point USA. The students were clear that the club would be developed under the name of Club America, which is Turning Point’s program geared to high schools.

The school board tabled any motion on this subject and delayed its decision until the February meeting to allow Board members time to research the matter.

INCC is encouraging attendance at the Monday, February 23, School Board meeting, scheduled for 5:00 PM at the Pacific High School library. There is an opportunity to sign up prior to each meeting to offer public comment. You can also attend virtually via Zoom. Here is a link for that:

Surely, there is an alternative way to offer students a space to “practice the values that define the United States” without endorsing the beliefs of an organization that undermines those same values.

See you Monday!
