Oregon Senate Bill 1098, also known as the “freedom to read” bill, has been passed and signed into law by Governor Tina Kotek. The bill prohibits school libraries from removing books based on the perspective they represent, particularly those about or by members of protected classes. It essentially prevents book bans in Oregon public schools if the ban constitutes discrimination based on protected characteristics according to the ACLU of Oregon.
